Health Education through Public Health is about promoting individual health, healthy communities, and healthy environments. With smoking, poor diet and sedentary lifestyles being the most common risk factors for disease, programming within the health education division educates persons on how to make changes and ways to break barriers toward a healthier lifestyle. By reducing tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure, increasing physical activity, improving nutrition, and reducing obesity incidence, our risk of disease will decrease and our years of life will increase. While it’s true some factors cannot be changed such as age, gender, and family history, it is also true a person can make a difference if they know how to lower their risks.
Health Education programs include working with schools, churches, and communities to implement evidence based programming. Through programming and systems changes our communities can better be able to promote healthy lifestyles, increase life expectancy, live healthier and fit lives, and improve the health of generations to come.

We Choose Health
The “We Choose Health” team was created in September of 2012 to complete the mission of transforming the health of communities by working with employers,
schools, hospitals and other cooperating agencies to initiate lasting changes. The team for South-Central Illinois Health Coalition has the following core focus areas: Worksite Wellness, Smoke-Free Public Places, Coordinated School Health and Baby Friendly Hospitals.
The initiative is geared to create sustainable change through making the healthy choice
the easy choice in our communities and environments.Click here to read more about the "We Choose Health" program or visit http://www.idph.state.il.us/wechoosehealth/index.htm
